5/13/2023 0 Comments Truman by jean reidyObservational humor, clear affection between Truman and Sarah, and bold adventure make this a memorable pet-owner love story. Fortunately for Truman and his new fans, he doesn’t have to go too far to find his person. The smallness of Truman’s world makes his expedition appropriately daunting-and funny-as he makes his way out of his tank and toward the door. Cummins ( Stumpkin) contributes expressive, thick-lined drawings that delineate cozy scenes inside and out of Sarah’s city residence. Readers know she’s probably not gone forever, but Truman doesn’t, and he resolves to find his way down to the bus to retrieve her. Truman’s a tortoise he’s “small, the size of a donut-a small donut-and every bit as sweet.” A perceptive fellow, he senses change one morning as his owner Sarah eats “a big banana with her breakfast” and “strapped on a backpack SOOOOOO big, thirty-two small tortoises could ride along.” Specific quantities confer verisimilitude to this tale by Reidy ( Pup 681): “Sarah placed seven green beans in Truman’s dish-two more than usual!” Then Sarah “kissed her finger and touched it to his shell and whispered, ‘Be brave,’ ” and boards the number 11 bus. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Samara cole doyonThis “celebration” makes magic out of the everyday joys of being in the world. Readers may find themselves wondering whether this is the same girl in many aspects or many-and then contemplating their own multifaceted natures. The girls and their friends and family wear a variety of hairstyles there are characters in hijabs, one with vitiligo, a child in a wheelchair, and an adult without a hand. Juanita’s earth-toned illustrations are joyful and remarkably inclusive. The text of the poem is delightfully filled with rich imagery and luscious language, complex enough to grow into but familiar enough to enjoy at any age. Each girl is featured with family members or friends, relating to nature, and on her own having fun or in a reflective moment. Still another tastes the “amber brown” of honey from her aunt’s hive and admires the “amber brown” of her own hair. On the next spread, a close-up of a bespectacled girl’s face is accompanied by the line, “Deep secret brown…like my eyes.” Another girl admires the “feathery brown” of tree shadows on a hike with her daddy and then the “feathery brown” of her eyelashes. Like the subtly churning river currents / playfully beckoning me / through my grandmother’s kitchen window….” A girl gazes, smiling, out the window at a scene of the natural world. A series of young brown girls admire the many different browns in their environments and in their own images in this poetic celebration of self and nature. Over the years I’ve read most of Goddard and owned a good many of his novels in hardback. It has a wicked twist at the end that any writer would be proud of. Loosely based on the famous Tichborne claimant case in which a person claims to be a long-lost, feared dead, aristocrat, the book sweeps across countries, class and historical events in masterly fashion. I’ve read it twice and will probably read it again. Goddard’s third book, Painting the Darkness (1989) is the best popular historical novel I know. In Pale Battalions (1988) is an extraordinarily evocative story of honour and dishonour and identity confusion during and in the aftermath of World War I. I eagerly awaited Goddard’s next book and wasn’t disappointed. Set in the Edwardian era with the Boer War and the shifting politics of the time as its themes, it told a complicated story of deception, lost love and betrayal. Jean introduced me to the work of Robert Goddard when she was working as fiction editor for Transworld and Goddard’s first novel Past Caring (1986) was being heavily promoted by the company. I liked the dynamic between Lee and Pat, and Lee with Pat's daughter, Jordan. No wasting time, it fast but also a heartwarming holiday story I craved. They waited for seventeen years for finally together. There's so many things Amy wanted to tell us about Lee and Pat in this short story, so I think there's no such thing like 'moving to fast' is reliable. I liked how Amy Aislin portrayed the 'reality' of a sport celebrity man with all his complicated situation, not selfish and thought about his baby girl's feeling when it comes to his relationship with Ashley/Ash/Lee, a ballet instructor for his daughter. Aww.this is a cute short Christmas story with a daddy wearing ballet tutu and all the glitter, finding his first love and a second chance of love. 5/13/2023 0 Comments Charming Cadavers by Liz WilsonIn general, women are deceptive, aggressive predators, and men are emasculated and easily ensnared. One example of this is Aśvaghoșa’s Saundarananda, in which he tells the life story of the Buddha’s half-brother Nanda. Throughout, Aśvaghoșa compares women to violent and even poisonous animals who are waiting to trap weak-natured men. Again, this is not surprising: in a tradition where “desire” is the overarching human problem, women-women’s bodies & women’s sexuality-very quickly and easily become the physical manifestation of that problem, and are demonized for it. 5/12/2023 0 Comments A dangerous thing josh lanyonJosh Lanyon has done it again with her latest entry into the ongoing saga of Will and Taylor, agents of the deceptively tranquil sounding "Department of Diplomatic Security." While I'm sure these two are happy to find a peaceful resolution, when possible, most of their work seems to involve more high-octane adventures complete with exciting chases, hand-to-hand combat and shoot-outs. "Here, in Temple Grandin's own words, is the story of what it is like to live with autism, to be among the few people who have broken through many of the neurological impairments associated with autism. Ultimately, it is Temple's unique ability to describe the way her visual mind works and how she first made the connection between her impairment and animal temperament that is the basis of her extraordinary gift and phenomenal success."-BOOK JACKET. She describes her painful isolation growing up "different" and her discovery of visual symbols to interpret the "ways of the natives." Thinking in Pictures also gives information from the front lines of autism, including treatment, medication, and diagnosis, as well as Temple's insights into genius, savants, sensory phenomena, and animal behavior. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Charming Cadavers by Liz WilsonFaure’s monograph was, however, preceded by L. P. N. The beginnings of Buddhism and sexuality as a research subfield can arguably be traced to the 1998 publication of Bernard Faure’s The Red Thread, a work that attempts to identity major themes and lines of tension in Buddhists’ imaginative encounters with, efforts to discipline, and philosophical understandings of human sexuality. In fact, as a growing body of scholarship has demonstrated, the sexual landscape of Buddhist traditions across time and place is varied, complex, and at times transgressive. Because of its high regard for celibate monasticism and incisive critique of desire as a root cause of suffering, Buddhism is widely assumed to be a sex-negative religion. |
